The city of Mission is located in one of the top growth areas in Kansas, just outside of the Kansas City metropolitan area in Johnson County. Johnson County residents rank among the most highly educated in the nation and of counties in the United States with populations of more than 500,000, Johnson County ranks first in percent of adults with at least a high school education. The Shawnee Mission School District serves students in grades K-12 living in Mission. Johnson County Community College is conveniently located a short commute away from Mission and offers more than 50 degree and certificate programs, along with transfer and articulation agreements with many four-year colleges and universities. MidAmerica Nazarene University is located in Johnson County and is a Christian liberal arts college. It attracts undergraduate and graduate students primarily from the north central United States.

Mission offers several outreach programs to residents to help keep neighborhoods healthy and provide affordable housing to residents. The Mission Possible program provides funds to Mission homeowners who need assistance with home repairs. Many neighborhoods host community-building events with the help of Neighborhood Grant funding, which provides up to $500 to help residents-based groups develop and sustain the community.

The Kansas City metropolitan area ranks as one of the most affordable in the nation and the Business Journal list of the best markets for young adults ranks Kansas City 26th out of the 67 metro areas included in the study. According to city-data.com, the median gross rent for Mission apartments was $758 in 2009.

The Mission Convention and Visitors Bureau hosts annual events held throughout the year. The Mission Family Festival is a celebration of Mission's heritage and includes events such as parades, carnivals and cattle drives. A wide sampling of local cuisine is offered at the Mission Arts & Eats Festival, and the event includes exhibitions of fine arts and crafts in addition to live performances. Mission residents can welcome the holiday season by heading to the Holiday Lights & Festival Sights celebration, which includes the lighting of the mayor's Christmas tree, Santa's arrival in his cyber sleigh and a closing fireworks display.
