In 1856, German immigrant Nicholas Krekel became O'Fallon's first resident a retailer when he opened the city's first store outside of his house. After his brother bought land in the area, he captured the pioneer spirit and quickly seized the opportunity to flourish in the expansive Midwestern region of the country. Soon after the city began to settle, he plotted a town and donated some of the property to develop a new railroad line.
The city was first incorporated in 1912 with about 600 residents. Mayor Jacoby was the town's first local and built the community's first drug store, installed O'Fallon's first telephone switchboard and invented a new type of grain reaper. In 1939, the town launched into an era of innovation after the city voted to install their first sanitary water and sewer system, attracting even more people into the area.
In the latter part of the 20th century, O'Fallon began growing due to the city's focus on infrastructure and residential, retail and manufacturing growth, resulting in a 25 percent increase in jobs. Because of the town's openness to innovation and growth, the community eventually became a boomtown.

One of the largest institutions in the area is Lindenwood University. This 4-year liberal arts school offers more than 120 undergraduate and graduate degrees in a multitude of fields. With approximately 17,000 students, people going to Lindenwood can expect to get an integrative education with everything a large campus has to offer. Another popular school in the area is nearby Maryville University, a smaller campus of around 3,900 students with a variety of undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs. According to O'Fallon's Economic Development Department, the largest private employers in the area include Citi, Mastercard International, LLC, and True Manufacturing Company, Inc. Live music acts from all over the country perform, a parade is held throughout the city, there is a carnival and crafts for the kids and a large fireworks display to get the entire city in the patriotic spirit.
