Overview of Olathe

Olathe is a great place to live. In fact, CNNMoney ranked it as the 57th best small city in America in 2012.  It’s no surprise, since the official website describes the city as “a hometown flavor with big city amenities and a quality of life second to none.” Residents here exude Midwestern charm, which creates an inviting atmosphere that attracts waves of new inhabitants.

As the fifth most populous city in Kansas, Olathe has nearly 128,000 residents who enjoy abundant parks, safe neighborhoods, and the best of cultural and historical attractions. Look for Olathe apartments for rent, and see why so many people love living in the Cowboy Boot Capital of the world.

Living in Olathe, KS

Dr. John T. Barton founded Olathe in 1857. After noticing that the land in the center of Johnson County was beautiful, he named the town “Olathe,” which roughly translates to "beautiful" in the Shawnee language. The city experienced a bout of violence during the Bleeding Kansas period, as local abolitionists clashed with pro-slavery forces from Missouri. When the political climate calmed down Olathe became a stop on the Oregon Trail, and much of the local economy was centered on passing travelers.

Olathe experienced exponential growth when Interstate 35 linked the town to Kansas City in the 1950s, allowing the town to join the Kansas City Metro Area. The city continues to expand as new residents and development continues to take over farmland in all directions. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Olathe is the 24th fastest-growing city in the United States. Rent an Olathe apartment and experience all that this Midwestern metropolis has to offer.

Olathe Work and Study

MidAmerica Nazarene University and Johnson County Community College may be the only schools in the city, but Olathe is surrounded by some of the best universities in Kansas. Baker University, National American University and Ottawa University are all nearby, with Avila University and Rockhurst College, among others, just 22 miles away in Kansas City. Olathe is also home to the Kansas State School for the Deaf, offering a tailored education to hearing-impaired students in early childhood through secondary school.

For those looking for work, Olathe has a number of commercial and industrial parks that are home to large, well-known companies like Honeywell, Garmin, Grundfos, ALDI and Husqvarna. Farmers Insurance also has an office here, and although the company is headquartered in Los Angeles, Olathe has the largest Farmers employee base in the country. Many residents also work for the U.S. Department of Transportation, as Olathe is home to an Air Route Traffic Control Center and the Johnson County Executive Airport. Workers from all over the professional spectrum can be found here, making Olathe apartments a great option for everyone.

Hailed as the second most livable city in the Midwest with a population over 100,000 by Midwest Living magazine, Olathe still maintains very reasonable rental rates.
