Overview of Helena

As one of the largest cities in the Treasure State surrounded by the beauty of scenic forests and mountainous terrain, the capital city of Helena is luring many people to relocate there. At the cross section of Interstate 15 and U.S. Highway 287, Helena apartments for rent are the perfect option for residents who want to have all the perks of mountain life, but still have a connection to the surrounding cities of central Montana.

With its small-town way of life, breathtaking landscapes, welcoming and friendly atmosphere and loads of outdoor recreation, it is not surprising that this mountain town saw a nine percent increase in population from 2000 to 2010, according to City-Data.

Living in Helena, MT

Like many other cities in Montana, Helena got its start in the mining industry; however, the city was founded by accident. Four men from Georgia came to Montana in hopes of discovering riches after hearing rumors of gold in the western part of the U.S. in 1864. The "Four Georgians" (an affectionate term coined by locals) finally found their gold in Helena after nearly giving up and heading back South. In just a few years the city became one the biggest western hubs, and eventually connected to the rest of the country after the Union Pacific Railroad came into the area. Although the mining shafts have been closed for many years, Helena still maintains its presence as a major distribution and transportation hub in Big Sky Country. A unique capital city, the city holds dear to its past with many preservation efforts, but looks to its future as one of the business epicenters in the Western states.

Helena Attractions and Special Events

The largest attraction in the area by far is Helena National Forest. Although this expansive park begins in the city, there are nearly 1 million acres of stunning landscapes that attract mountaineers, hikers and thrill seekers from across the country every year for outdoor recreation. Home to the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, this park offers stunning views of untouched earth that Lewis and Clark passed through many years ago. Everything from hunting to snowmobiling is offered at this beautiful Montana green space.
