Overview of Henderson

If you're living in a Henderson apartment, you may occasionally feel like you're living in Las Vegas. That's understandable, as the two cities snug together like dice in a gambler's fist. They're pretty different places, however. What happens in Vegas is supposed to stay there. Henderson, on the other hand, prides itself on small town values. You can place confident bets on Henderson, but it's no Sin City.

Living in Henderson

Henderson first sprang to life with the Basic Magnesium Plant, which helped the United States build munitions for the Second World War. When the war was won, many people moved away and Henderson almost got sold off as war surplus. Instead, Nevada purchased the industrial plants in town and incorporated Henderson in 1953. It grew quickly, expanding from about 13 square miles to over 94 today.

If you're looking to settle in Henderson, you'll have a good choice of neighborhoods. There are about a dozen master planned communities here. Anthem is up in the Black Mountains, providing outstanding views. Lake Las Vegas is built around a 320-acre man-made lake. Solera tends to be more affordable but has age restrictions.

Work & Study in Henderson

The largest employer in Henderson is the City of Henderson itself. That's actually not too out of the ordinary. Many of the other jobs in town are in the hospitality industry, working for a hotel or casino such as Green Valley Ranch or M Resort. There are health care jobs at the two St. Rose Dominican Hospital campuses as well as at Medco Health Solutions. Zappos.com and Walmart also do a lot of hiring in Henderson.

If you're coming to Henderson for a higher education, Nevada State College is in this city. Also here you'll find the Roseman University of Health Sciences and branches of the College of Southern Nevada, the Art Institute of Las Vegas, National University, and others.

Cost of Living in Henderson

The average rent for a two-bedroom Henderson apartment comes in at $847 a month. Housing is relatively easy to find, as indicated by a vacancy rate of over ten percent. On the whole, you'll find living in Henderson to cost more than the national average.

Henderson Attractions & Entertainment

While there's no lack of things to keep you busy in Las Vegas, Henderson has a few attractions of its own as well. The Ocean Spray Factory and the Ethel M Chocolate Factory both operate tours. There's the Clark County Heritage Museum if you're looking into local history. For gamblers who prefer a quieter ambience, both the Fiesta and Sunset Station casinos are in Henderson. From here, you're also a stones throw from three of the world's most impressive man-made attractions: the Las Vegas strip, Hoover Dam, and Lake Mead.

Henderson Special Events

You can expect a full schedule of special events to keep life in Henderson interesting. There's the Henderson Heritage Parade and Festival and the Art Festival of Henderson in the spring. Summerfest and Ho'Olaule'A Pacific Islands Festival entertain during the summer. In the fall, Shakespeare in the Park and the SuperRun Classic Car Show come to town. That leaves the TransWest Ford Henderson 250 Desert Race waiting for winter.
