Overview of Bedford

Bedford, NH, is a small suburb outside Manchester, New Hampshire. Bedford is famous because it is the home of the Segway made by Dean Kamen. It is also known for a very low crime rate and having a lot of professionals and students that rent property in the neighborhood. The closest cities to town are Merrimack, New Boston, Amherst, Goffstown and Manchester allowing residents convenient access to even more entertaining attractions.

Bedford started out as Narangassett, named after the Native American tribe that lived in the area in 1733. It was later named Bedford after Lord Russell, the Duke of Bedford, in 1750. The city grew and developed through years of influence from the Manchester Railroad. Retail industries have helped shape the community in recent years.

Currently, there are just over 21,000 people living in the city. Getting around town is relatively easy because of quick access to Interstates 93, 293 and 495 as well as State Routes 3 and 128. The Manchester-Boston Regional Airport is the largest airport in the area servicing North America. Walking and bicycling are popular ways to travel in the downtown area with cabs and ride sharing being more prevalent in the outskirts of town. If you rent in the city, there are plenty of travel options for students attending school to navigate the neighborhood without a car.
