Living in Derry, NH
The origins of Derry go all the way back to Scotland, where many of the town’s founders came from in the 17th century. For quite some time in the town’s history, agriculture was a major driving force for the economy. However, before the early 20th century the community turned to industrial development when Colonel William Pillsbury opened up shoe factories in the town. The last of this legacy was destroyed in a fire in 1960. After the construction of Interstate 93, the population of Derry began to increase, and it tripled in 20 years. Housing developments and Derry apartments were built where fields and forests once spanned and commercial development turned the area into a desired town.
Derry Attractions and Special Events
Derry is home to the Robert Frost Farm, which was the famed poet's family house from 1900 to 1911. Frost attributed many of his acclaimed poems to his life in Derry, which makes this attraction a major part of the evolution of the town. The two-story farmhouse represents typical New England style in a simple white design. This house is a National Historic Landmark.
The region boasts several annual festivals year-round, such as the Free Strawberry Fest, Lowell’s Annual Quilt Festival and the Hampstead Independence Day Festival.
