Laconia, N.H., is a beautiful lakefront community tucked along the mountains. The scenic Lakes Region city is located in Belknap County near Lake Winnipesaukee. The earliest settlers in Laconia built a colonial fort in 1746, but European settlers did not stay in the area until 1761, when it was known as Meredith Bridge. This settlement was considered very self-sufficient and produced all the necessities people needed to survive.
By 1765, lumber, wheat and corn mills were established on the road now known as Mill Street. Soon after, taverns popped up, and in the early 19th century manufacturing mills opened up. Into the latter half of the century, Laconia became a thriving industrial center. After a devastating fire in 1860, many of the new developments were destroyed. Manufacturing still remained into the area well in the mid-1900s, until they relocated and the downtown center underwent revitalization. Laconia apartments downtown are surrounded by historical significance and rich stories.
Laconia Attractions and Special Events
Laconia is the perfect place for motorcycle enthusiasts to kick back, as it is home to the annual Laconia Motorcycle Week that began in the early 1920s. This event attracts thousands from near and far for an exciting week of camping, live music, organized rides, food, performances and much more. This historical event is beloved by more than just motorcyclists and proves to be a mainstay in the community.
