Milford apartments for rent can be found all across the 25.41 square miles of this New Hampshire town. The community had an estimated population of 15,115 people as of 2010 and is located in the southern portion of the state, near the Massachusetts border.
The town sits roughly 10 miles west of Nashua and provides access to major roads, including Routes 3 and 101, which allow easy transportation to Manchester and Boston as well. Milford has the nickname of "Granite Town in the Granite State," as the area is full of high-quality granite quarries. However, the town most likely received its name from a shallow water crossing on the Souhegan River that is near an early mill site known as Mill Ford.
The town of Milford was incorporated in 1794, with land portions from Hollis, Amherst and the Mile Slip, which was a strip of land that stretched between the Dunstable grant and the Raby grant. Milford apartments for rent provide residents with a rich history that they can be proud of, as at one point in time, Milford was a major stop on the Underground Railroad.
A popular area of town is the historic downtown district, located in the heart of the community. Here people can find numerous shops, a thriving business hub and residential sector. Milford's most prized and important historic asset can be found here in the Town Hall belfry: Paul Revere's Bell. This bell has hung in the Milford Town Hall since 1869, and only eight other Paul Revere bells exist that are older than Milford's.
Business professionals can find an appropriate setting among Milford apartments. The Town of Milford website revealed that there was an estimated 350 employers in the city as of 2000. Among the major employers are Hitchiner Manufacturing Corp, Citronics, Norton Ceramics, Airmar Technology Corporation and the Milford School District.
Students have a number of educational facilities within reach, including the Daniel Webster College, Nashua Community College and Rivier University in the nearby town of Nashua, as well as Saint Anselm College in Manchester. Daniel Webster is a four-year, private institution that enrolls approximately 650 students, while Nashua Community College was established in 1970 and has undergone a series of renovations recently. Saint Anselm College was named one of America's "Colleges with a Conscience" by The Princeton Review for consistently focused on reshaping the world for good.
According to data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau, Milford rentals have a vacancy rate of 7.7 percent, and the median rent was $1,071 as of 2010. Nearly half of all renters fall in the gross rent range of $1,000 to $1,499, with 86.3 percent of all renters falling in the wider range of $750 to $1,500 or more. The data further indicated that roughly 38.9 percent of total renters reported spending 35 percent or more of their household income on gross rental costs.
City-Data information revealed that in March 2012, the cost of living in Milford was 17.9 percent higher than the national average.
There are a number of area attractions at the doorsteps of those living in Milford apartments, including the Milford Historical Society Museum. The museum was established in a Greek revival structure constructed in 1853. Visitors can appreciate the community history and culture through a series of exhibits that include late Victorian-era home furnishings and the log cabin exhibit.
Those interested in outdoor recreation can explore the Souhegan River, which flows for 31 miles through a number of communities, including Milford. The river is formed where the south and west branches meet in the town of New Ipswich, flowing through Greenville and Wilton before arriving in Milford.
