The opening of the company created a domino effect, as other factories, homes, shops and institutions to open up in the region. New mills were used for water power for cotton production, which was based on practices used by the Boston Manufacturing Company of Waltham.
By the 1920s, development started to level off and by the time the Great Depression hit, local building and manufacturing declined significantly. For some time, the economic development of Newmarket almost entirely disappeared, but after the depression ended the Sam Smith Shoe Co. came to the area.
The history of these times still lives on in the community. Many of the old mill buildings and shops in downtown Newmarket are still standing and serve other purposes today. The town still retains its 19th century industrial, commercial, public and domestic architecture.
