Living in Bloomfield, NJ
Bloomfield was originally a part of Newark, and its first settlers included the English and Dutch. The area later became known as Yantecaw, a name provided by the Lenni-Lenape Indians. The township eventually earned its current name from General Joseph Bloomfield, a Revolutionary War leader who later became Governor of New Jersey.
Several roads contributed to the region's growth, including the Old Road to Newark, the Road to Newtown and Second River and the Road to Cranetown. Additionally, the Second River, Third River and Toney's Brook waterways supported the community in many ways. These waterways led to the development of paper mills and tanneries in the area, bringing more people to the region and eventually resulting in the development of the area's first school in 1758.
