The borough of Bloomingdale is located in northeastern New Jersey, approximately five miles northwest of Wayne and 20 miles northwest of Newark. The borough is situated in Passaic County and considered a suburb of New York City. The area that is known today as Bloomingdale was first settled in 1712 by Europeans. Soon after their arrival, the Bloomingdale Forge was constructed. The area witnessed a great deal of progress in the mid-19th century at the establishment of the New Jersey Midland Railroad. The business district began to grow and thrive along the Pequannock River and the Paterson-Hamburg Turnpike, and the community developed alongside it. Bloomingdale was officially incorporated as a borough on February 23, 1918.
