Overview of Camden

Located directly across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, Camden has been a fixture along New Jersey's waterfront for centuries. Home to many businesses, universities and a metropolis close by, people continue to seek Camden apartments for rent because of its attractive scenery and career opportunities. According to information from the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a population of more than 77,000 people, making it one of the largest cities in the Garden State.

Living in Camden, NJ

Camden's first settlement occurred when the Dutch West India Company built Fort Nassau in 1626, and for many years the Dutch and Swedish fought for territorial control of the area. When the English acquired much of the lands in the Three Rivers Region, Quakers escaping persecution reshaped West New Jersey. By coexisting peacefully with Native Americans and other settlers, the area was not only quaint, but quite diverse.

The city began to establish itself as a ferry city due to its close proximity to the many rivers that flow through the area. Since all forms of transportation were connecting Camden to other cities across the Mid-Atlantic, Camden and the rest of New Jersey began to experience population growth during the 19th century. Eventually, the area separated into three settlements and urban expansion began to take over the city during the Industrial Revolution.

With an ideal location between two waterways, manufacturers and shipyards were drawn to the area because of its easy access to transportation. Ever since, East Camden has been largely residential and West Camden's location near the Cooper River has always made a perfect location for factories and industrial development sites.

Camden Work and Study

According to the Camden County website, the largest employers in the area include the Campbell Soup Company headquarters, Alliance Data Systems and Bancroft Neurohealth. L-3 Communications Systems also makes up a large chunk of the employment in the area. Camden sits in the fifth largest Metropolitan Statistical Area in the United States, so whether you are commuting to nearby Philadelphia or working in Jersey, finding accessible rentals in Camden should be an easy and affordable venture.

Rutgers University makes its home in Camden, and is often regarded as "The State University of New Jersey." Founded in 1766, this university has been a fixture in the community before the Revolutionary War. One of the nation's foremost research facilities, this institution provides a full intellectual spectrum in undergraduate, graduate and doctorate degrees.

Camden Attractions and Special Events

Some of the most exciting things to do in Camden are found along the waterfront. Wiggins Park is home to many outdoor concerts and festivals that overlook the Philadelphia skyline. The Camden Riversharks, the city's minor league baseball team, has their own baseball stadium that attracts a lot of fans - even those that aren't locals - in the spring and summer here as well. The waterfront is also home to the Adventure Aquarium, where the city features to a 550,000-gallon shark tank and a bevy of marine wildlife.
