Dayton was first called “The Cross Roads,” when James Whitlock built the first tavern here in 1750. Early commerce included nurseries, farm implements, tow hay drivers and bricklaying. In 1866, the town’s name was changed to Dayton in honor of William L. Dayton, an attorney for the Freehold and Jamesburg Agricultural Railroad. He helped settle cases regarding locations of the railroad right-of-way.

There are also three area hospitals, and Dayton is perfectly situated between Princeton and New Brunswick, cities that have attracted many high tech companies. When residents need to travel, they choose from several airports within 90 miles, including Mercer County, Philadelphia, Newark International, LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy International.

Dayton is just eight miles east of one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious universities. Dayton residents travel to Princeton to cheer on the Princeton Tigers at their sporting events or to enjoy the university’s many cultural events.
Dayton is just one hour south from New York City on the New Jersey turnpike. Residents spend the day in the city sightseeing and shopping and enjoying everything else the Big Apple has to offer.
