The township of Deptford is located in southwestern New Jersey, approximately six miles southwest of Gloucester and nine miles south of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The town is situated in Gloucester County and is considered part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Deptford was originally founded in 1623 by Dutch settlers, and it was established as a township in June 1695. The town was named after a town in Kentshire, England, and it was officially incorporated in February 1798. Additionally, the township is famous for being the site of the first hot air balloon landing in North America.
Today, Deptford is the third-largest municipality in Gloucester County, but the township used to be even bigger. The original township in 1695 encompassed more than 106 square miles of land that was divided up into West Deptford, Washington Township, Monroe, Westville, Woodbury and Woodbury Heights.
