Overview of Eatontown

Like much of New Jersey, Eatontown was officially settled in the mid-19th century, but has roots going all the way back to 1670. Now officially a borough that is part of Monmouth County, Eatontown has experienced a number of changes over the years, from being a small site of a grist mill to a booming military town. Since nearby Army base Fort Monmouth closed in 2011, the borough is simply a quiet suburb in northeast New Jersey, and those looking for Eatontown apartments for rent are sure to find something to suit their fancy.

Living in Eatontown, NJ

Eatontown's history dates all the way back to 1670, when Thomas Eaton of nearby Shewsbury came to survey the shores of Mill Brook (now Wampum Brook) for potential commercial opportunities. He found these opportunities in the form of water power on the brook, and decided to build a grist mill for water power that would grind farmers' grain into flour for baking.

After the mill was created, settlement continued, and by 1796, Eatontown had a thriving business district that contained a tannery, tavern, inn and general store. Today, Eatontown's residents still enjoy some of the original buildings in what is now referred to as "The Village." The borough's layout is still based around many of the original trails created by the Lenni Lenape Indians, who settled in this area from Delaware before the settlers. Some of the first white settlers were Quakers or Episcopalians, and their influence is still prevalent in this borough of 12,709.

Eatontown Work and Study

Although nearby Fort Monmouth acted as a major area employer after it was established after World War I, the Army base was closed in 2011 as part of the Base Realignment and Closure Commission's recommendations and was relocated to Maryland. In 2010, the top employer in Monmouth County was Meridian Health System, which includes Riverview and Jersey Shore Medical Centers. The County of Monmouth Hall of Records, Centra State Healthcare Systems and Monmouth Medical Center were also leading employers.

Education in Eatontown is a long, strong tradition dating back to the first school built by Quakers in the area in 1806. The borough has had a number of one and two-room school houses, but now has three elementary schools and one middle school with about 1,100 students.

Rentals in Eatontown, NJ and Cost of Living

The cost of living might seem high to some people looking for apartments in Eatontown. The median household income was $60,188 from 2006-2010, and in 2010, the median gross rent in the borough was $1,123, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Those who seek rentals in Eatontown will join a large population of renters - tenants comprise about 55 percent of residents. This may create some competition when it comes to looking for apartments in this borough, but it has also helped establish a Tenant Rights Committee, which works with renters in the town to maintain an excellent quality of life for all residents.
