Overview of Edgewater

Edgewater is located in Bergen County in the northeastern part on New Jersey, approximately three miles northeast of North Bergen and six miles north of the bustling New York City. Edgewater apartments for rent are excellent ways to join the estimated 11,600 people living here.

Edgewater is positioned on the shore of the Hudson River, which also serves as a barrier between the states of New Jersey and New York. The borough offers its inhabitants a mature community, as only 17.7 percent of the population under the age of 18.

Living in Edgewater, NJ

Residents in Edgewater apartments can enjoy being part of a community with a rich history, as the borough evolved in the shadow of the great New York City. The first to inhabit this area were the Lenni Lenape and the Tappan Native American tribes, and the first European settler arrived in the area in 1640, a Dutch seaman and navigator by the name of Captain David Pietersz De Vries.

When De Vries established the community, it was known by the name of Vriessendael and was the first known colony in Bergen County. However, this settlement was destroyed in 1643 by Kieft's War, later re-established as a fisherman colony. The area that is known as Edgewater today was originally incorporated in 1894 with the name of Undercliff, and eventually reincorporated in 1899 as the borough of Edgewater. The borough received its namesake from its prime location on the edge of the Hudson River.

Visitors and locals enjoy looking for a free-flying colony of Monk Parakeets, also known as Quaker Parrots, which call Edgewater home. These small green parrots have lived in the township since 1980 and when they were last counted in 2008, the flock numbered roughly 230 birds. The flock can typically be found in the Memorial Park, which is located along the River Road area and Route 5. People can keep an eye out for these birds' large, permanent nests that make the lovely birds easy to spot. While it is unknown how these parrots found Edgewater as their home, some speculate that they originated from a damaged crate at the John F. Kennedy Airport in the 1960s.
