However, this settlement was destroyed in 1643 by Kieft's War, later re-established as a fisherman colony. The area that is known as Edgewater today was originally incorporated in 1894 with the name of Undercliff, and eventually reincorporated in 1899 as the borough of Edgewater. The borough received its namesake from its prime location on the edge of the Hudson River.

These small green parrots have lived in the township since 1980 and when they were last counted in 2008, the flock numbered roughly 230 birds. The flock can typically be found in the Memorial Park, which is located along the River Road area and Route 5. People can keep an eye out for these birds' large, permanent nests that make the lovely birds easy to spot. While it is unknown how these parrots found Edgewater as their home, some speculate that they originated from a damaged crate at the John F. Kennedy Airport in the 1960s.
