Dutch settlers came to the area and remained there until 1664, when England acquired the land. However, land grants were given out and many went to the Dutch. By the early 1900s, a unique planned community coined as the “Town for the Motor Age” was created. However, development was hampered due to the Great Depression, and only two “superblocks” remain today. This area still plays a vital role in the community of Fair Lawn today. By 1924, Fair Lawn was incorporated as a borough, and the town continued to develop into the 1950s.
