The borough of Fort Lee is located in northeastern New Jersey, approximately three miles northeast of North Bergen and roughly seven miles north of New York City. The town sits in Bergen County and is considered part of the Bergen-Passaic metropolitan area. The area that is known as Fort Lee today was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Indians. The borough was named after General Charles Lee, who played an integral role in defending New York City during the American Revolutionary War. Fort Lee is the entrance to the renowned George Washington Bridge, which extends over the Hudson River to Upper Manhattan, N.Y. It is rumored that George Washington marched his troops down the road in Fort Lee that is now known as Main Street.
In Fort Lee's early years, the area was inhabited by pronounced immigrant communities. Fort Lee was officially incorporated March 29, 1904.
