The Dutch first settled Hackensack in 1693 after making peace with the Lenni Lenape Indians on the land along the Hackensack River. Originally known as New Barbadoes Township, the two groups lived harmoniously in the area for years until the end of the Revolutionary War, when residents organized the first functioning government system. During the war, George Washington formed his headquarters in the village during the retreat from Fort Lee. In the late 19th century, the town was incorporated and started to grow into the city it is today.
