The Dutch first settled Hackensack in 1693 after making peace with the Lenni Lenape Indians on the land along the Hackensack River. During the war, George Washington formed his headquarters in the village during the retreat from Fort Lee. In the late 19th century, the town was incorporated and started to grow into the city it is today.

Despite the expense, people still flock to the area in droves to get the best of New York City without having to live in one of the boroughs.

Though the city itself does not have a packed calendar of events, Hackensack is not far from exciting attractions. Catch a New York Giants or New York Jets game at nearby Giants Stadium, or spend the afternoon at the Sportsworld Amusement Park or Meadowlands Entertainment Complex a short distance from the city center.
