Overview of Hackettstown

If you are looking for a home in a quaint historical community with just enough of a college-town feel, look no further than Hackettstown apartments for rent. This community of 9,696 is located in a valley along the Musconetcong River in Warren County, New Jersey.

Settlement in the town dates back to 1853, but it grew when Centenary College was established in 1867. Although the college was founded by the Newark Conference of the United Methodist Church, it has evolved over the years from a co-educational prep school to an independent, four-year college offering both undergraduate and graduate areas of study.

Whether you come to Hackettstown for higher education, work at the headquarters of M&M/Mars, Inc. or to settle with a family, this small town has has plenty to offer.

Living in Hackettstown, NJ

The first settlers to arrive in Hackettstown appeared around 1754, drawn there by the fertile river valley. Before Europeans came to the area, an Indian village called Musconetcong existed there. The early European settlers subsisted mainly on farming, but a grist mill and sawmill for grain and lumber boosted the development of business in the area. Although the town did not host any Revolutionary War battles, the spot was strategic and drew the likes of then-General George Washington. The town grew at the turn of the century and into the 1800s, when Centenary College was established. Growth continued into the 1900s, when M&M/Mars candy company relocated to Hackettstown from Newark.

The town was named no. 72 on Money Magazine's Best Places to Live list in 2005. Today, the residents of Hackettstown enjoy a relatively quiet lifestyle with just enough activity from Centenary College and a chocolate-flavored boost to the economy thanks to Mars, Inc.
