The township of Jackson was incorporated as a municipality in 1844 but its history dates back more than 330 years with the Monmouth Patent. The patent was a purchase of land from the Lenni Lenapes Indians by a dozen residents from nearby Long Island and Rhode Island. Settlers came into this area steadily from the 1800s to 1960s, when major home developments began springing up on existing farmlands and forests.

In its early days, Jackson mainly operated as a farming community, with timber cutting, charcoal and tar as the dominant industries. The township indicates that in recent years, the chief industries have been professional services, retail and manufacturing. The largest area business is the Six Flags Great Adventure Theme Park and Wild Safari in the northwest corner of the township, employing roughly 200 full-time employees and between 5,000 and 6,000 seasonal employees.

The estimated median household income in 2008 was $83,232 and the estimated median house or condo value in 2008 was $322,542, up from $149,200 in 2000.

Many locals and visitors take day trips to the popular Six Flags Great Adventure theme park, which includes a wild animal safari on a 350-acre plot, many thrilling rides and attractions and a water-adventure park. For shopping, a prime spot is the Six Flags Factory Outlets, which is made up of more than 70 stores such as J. Crew and Nike.
According to the township, many locals enjoy visiting the Jersey shore in the summer as it is nearby and is particularly popular among younger crowds.
