Lakewood was originally called Washington's Furnace in 1814 by Jesse Richards and William Irwin, the founders of an iron company. Joseph Brick purchased the business in 1832 and helped revitalize the company, and the township was named Bricksburg after he passed away. It became Lakewood in 1880, and the decade that followed led to the construction of several hotels throughout the community.

The U.S. Census Bureau classifies Lakewood as a census-designated place (CDP). Lakewood had a population of 53,805 residents in 2010, and nearly 20 percent of its citizens were under the age of 5 during the same period. It spans 7.08 square miles, with roughly 7,602 residents per square mile.
