Overview of Matawan
Matawan, loocated in Monmouth County, has been inhabited for over 310 years, making it one of the oldest establishments in the state of New Jersey. A Native American Indian tribe named Lenape were the original inhabitants in Matawan before Dutch settlers began populating the community. Later, Scottish-Irish settlers gave it a new name called New Aberdeen. The town was formally settled in 1895.
