At the time, the area was known as the village of Chestertown. In 1722, Thomas Moore and his wife, Elizabeth, settled in the area and purchased 33 acres where they built a community. Over time, the name changed to become Moorestown and the town split off from Chester, which at the time spanned the entire area of what is now considered Moorestown and its surrounding townships. The community didn’t incorporate until an act of the New Jersey Legislature approved it in March 1922. Moorestown apartments today still hold a historical significance, especially those located downtown.

Autumn in Moorestown is held every year on the second Saturday in October to celebrate the rich historical culture in the community. Attracting visitors from across the region, this event welcomes fall with arts and crafts, antiques, classic cars, scarecrows and pumpkin painting. Residents and visitors of all ages attend the event, which takes place in the Main Street business district.
