Overview of Perth Amboy
The city of Perth Amboy is located in northeast New Jersey, roughly three miles south of Woodbridge and approximately 16 miles south of Newark. The city is situated in Middlesex County and is considered part of the Middlesex-Somerset-Hunterdon metropolitan area. Perth Amboy apartments for rent offer an excellent way to join the more than 51,000 people living across 4.7 square miles of land.
Perth Amboy is a particularly family friendly city, with more than 27 percent of its population younger than 18. The city offers easy transportation to New York's Staten Island via the Outerbridge Crossing, and John F. Kennedy International Airport is roughly an hour's drive away.
Living in Perth Amboy, NJ
Perth Amboy has a rich history that dates back to December 8, 1651, when the Lenni Lenape Native Americans transferred land that sits at the mouth of the Raritan River to Augustine Herman. Perth Amboy is one of the only cities in the country to have been incorporated twice, receiving its first charter in 1718 and its second after the American Revolution in 1784.
Residents enjoy life in a waterfront city, and Perth Amboy underwent a transformation of its waterfront walkway along Sadowski Parkway in 2000. Nearly one-third of the city's land was redeveloped along the waterfront, beaches were restored and brownfields were cleaned up. The redevelopment also saw significant construction of housing, a community center, an open-air market and many new retail and service facilities.
Perth Amboy Attractions and Special Events
Residents of Perth Amboy apartments and visitors can enjoy a visit to numerous historical buildings, scenic landscapes and recreation facilities. Families can enjoy time together picnicking, and the Perth Amboy Recreation Department offers numerous facilities for children's sports, such as tennis courts, pool tables and basketball courts.
Another popular area attraction is the Raritan Yacht Club, which is one of the oldest clubs in the nation and has been positioned on Perth Amboy's shores since 1865. Visitors can find a historic clubhouse, large yard, mooring field and a busy launch service. While the club was founded with the intent to provide residents with a safe place to enjoy boating, there are numerous events sponsored here throughout the year that continue this spirit of safe fun for all.
