Overview of Piscataway

Located 35 miles southwest of the New York City Metropolitan Area, Piscataway is one of the most charming and fastest-growing neighborhoods in New Jersey. With an ethnically diverse community, great schools and several Fortune 500 companies calling the town home, it makes sense that so many Jersey residents are finding home in Piscataway apartments for rent. According to information from the U.S. Census Bureau, the estimated population is more than 50,000 people, indicating that Piscataway is showing no signs of slowing down.

Living in Piscataway, NJ

For many years, Piscataway was owned by England but sold to four New Hampshire men in 1666. The area got its name from Lenni Lenape Native Americans meaning "great deer river." Piscataway is one of the 50 oldest towns in the country, and its historic downtown district is on the National Register of Historic Places. The founding of this town was very important because it was one of the first permanent settlements along the Atlantic seaboard that led to the formation of the United States.

One of the main reasons Piscataway grew from a small Indian village into the thriving town is it's township form of government. It provides for the direct election of a mayor and seven council members. The city has a heart as well. It is home to many civic, charitable and nonprofit groups including the Lions, Elks and Rotary Clubs. In 2003, the Piscataway received New Jersey's only Sports Town award, and in 2008 and 2010, the town was voted by Money magazine as one of best 100 towns in the country to live in, according to the city's website.

Piscataway Work and Play

Piscataway is home to many successful companies and corporations, including GE Healthcare, Johnson & Johnson, Colgate Palmolive Technology Center and Telcordia Technologies. Whether you are working in town or traveling into the New York City area for work, Piscataway rentals near Route 287, the New Jersey Turnpike or the Garden State Parkway are your best bets for reducing your commute time significantly.

One of the largest institutions in the area is Rutgers University, offering a full spectrum of undergraduate and graduate degrees. However, the median household income was about $18,000 more per year than the average New Jersey resident, making Piscataway a very affordable place to live.
