New Jersey may be a small state in comparison to others, but prospective residents can find plenty of space in the city of Vineland, the largest city in area (69 square miles). Vineland was one of the first planned communities and got its start in 1861. It was chosen by Charles Landis, a historical visionary, because it had a railroad laid across the land and had easy access to Philadelphia. Landis first purchased 20,000 acres and paid workers $1 per day to create Landis Avenue, which gave way to a post office and eventually brought settlers.

Landis' first residents were farmers and industrialists, and a group of progressive thinkers who called themselves the "Friends of Progress" soon built historic Plum Street Hall as a way to host meetings and lectures, most of which centered around the issue of equal rights. Susan B. Anthony visited Vineland and spoke at Plum Street Hall in 1868 - more than 50 years before the 19th amendment was passed.

Landis eventually put Vineland on the map, though unintentionally, by insisting Vineland remain a dry town and passed a law prohibiting liquor sale. Because churches needed wine for their religious ceremonies, Dr. Thomas Bramwell Welch found a way to preserve grape juice in 1869 without fermenting it and turning it into wine. Welch went on to create the company now known as Welch's Fruit Juice Company, and its first factory is located where the current Vineland Police Department resides.

Although Vineland is larger than many other cities in New Jersey, many of its residents choose to travel outside the city's limits and in other parts of Cumberland County to seek work. Top employers in the county include South Jersey Hospital System, Gerresheimer Glass, Wal-Mart, ShopRite, Durand Glass Manufacturing Company, Seabrook Brothers & Sons, Wawa, F&S Produce and Omni Baking. The top 10 employers in the county combined provide approximately 8,500 jobs to locals.

People looking for Vineland apartments may also find work in the Vineland Public Schools school district, which offer quality instruction at Vineland Adult Education Center, Vineland High School, five middle schools, eight elementary schools and four kindergarten and pre-K schools.

In addition, plenty of continuing education opportunities exist for Vinelanders, and 28 colleges and universities are located within a 60-mile radius of Vineland.

Vineland opportunities offer a modest living and laid-back way of life just an hour away from Philadelphia and two and a half hours from Manhattan. Cost of living reflects a small town atmosphere, where residents' income is approximately $52,422.

According to information from the U.S. Census Bureau, the average Vineland property is worth an estimated $189,418. However, rent can be a more affordable option and was approximately $854 in 2009.

Thanks to the small size of New Jersey, Vineland residents can easily travel to other towns and take part in seasonal festivals - even head two hours northeast to spend the summer in Jersey City at the shore! With large metropolitan areas only a short drive away and a rich city history in their backyards, Vinelanders won't soon be short of things to do and places to go in all seasons of the year.
