Overview of Voorhees

Part of the Greater Philadelphia Metropolitan Area, Voorhees is one of the fastest-growing communities in New Jersey and shows no signs of slowing down. The township's name was given in honor of Foster McGowan Voorhees, a famous two-term New Jersey governor during the late 19th century. This charming Jersey town has a population of just less than 1,000 residents, according to information from the U.S. Census Bureau, making this a fantastic suburb close to everything the city of Philadelphia has to offer.

Living in Voorhees, NJ

Many of the first residents in Camden County were Quakers, a group of English settlers who sought refuge in the American colonies because of their religious beliefs. A peaceful group, they lived in harmony with the Lenni Lenape Native Americans who had lived in the area for thousands of years. The earliest European settlers were the Dutch, however, who came into the area as early as 1626 to set up fur trapping posts along the Delaware River. Because Quakers opposed war and would not bear arms for either the Colonial or English armies, many of them were persecuted and driven out of the Camden County community.

After the war, many bridges and ferry systems were built connecting Philadelphia to Camden County, ushering in significant economic and residential growth. Between 1834 to the days leading up to the Civil War, the city jumped from just less than 10,000 residents to a thriving area of more than 25,000 citizens. After the Civil War, Camden County began to emerge as a leader in the manufacturing world, producing businesses like Campbell's Soup and the Victor Talking Machine Company, which would later be called RCA.

Today, the neighborhoods around Voorhees are shaping into an area that is excited for future prospects. With so many community events and a close-knit atmosphere, it is no wonder that many New Jersey residents are calling Voorhees home.
