Overview of Voorhees

Part of the Greater Philadelphia Metropolitan Area, Voorhees is one of the fastest-growing communities in New Jersey and shows no signs of slowing down. The township's name was given in honor of Foster McGowan Voorhees, a famous two-term New Jersey governor during the late 19th century. This charming Jersey town has a population of just less than 1,000 residents, according to information from the U.S. Census Bureau, making this a fantastic suburb close to everything the city of Philadelphia has to offer.

Living in Voorhees, NJ

Many of the first residents in Camden County were Quakers, a group of English settlers who sought refuge in the American colonies because of their religious beliefs. A peaceful group, they lived in harmony with the Lenni Lenape Native Americans who had lived in the area for thousands of years. The earliest European settlers were the Dutch, however, who came into the area as early as 1626 to set up fur trapping posts along the Delaware River. Because Quakers opposed war and would not bear arms for either the Colonial or English armies, many of them were persecuted and driven out of the Camden County community.

After the war, many bridges and ferry systems were built connecting Philadelphia to Camden County, ushering in significant economic and residential growth. Between 1834 to the days leading up to the Civil War, the city jumped from just less than 10,000 residents to a thriving area of more than 25,000 citizens. After the Civil War, Camden County began to emerge as a leader in the manufacturing world, producing businesses like Campbell's Soup and the Victor Talking Machine Company, which would later be called RCA.

Today, the neighborhoods around Voorhees are shaping into an area that is excited for future prospects. With so many community events and a close-knit atmosphere, it is no wonder that many New Jersey residents are calling Voorhees home.

Voorhees Work and Study

Many students in the area travel to nearby Philadelphia for their education, and one of the most popular is Drexel University. One of America's largest private universities, this institution has approximately 25,000 students. Drexel also prides itself on being a global research university ranked in the top 100 in the nation. In an urban campus with plenty of exciting activities, Drexel is a great place for any student residing in Voorhees to earn a great education. If you are planning on commuting to Philadelphia for classes, make sure you secure your Voorhees apartment well before school starts in order to find the perfect pad for you.

According to the New Jersey Department of the Treasury, the top employers in the area are Echelon Mall, West Jersey Health Systems Inc. and CIGNA Insurance Inc. The commercial development is as equally diverse, including jobs in manufacturing, professional and medical offices, and industrial sites.

Rentals in Voorhees, NJ and Cost of Living

According to information from city-data.com, the median rent in 2008 for Voorhees apartments was $1,075 per month. Although an average of 8.5 percent of New Jersey residents live below the poverty level, residents in Voorhees fare much better at 5.7 percent, making it a great place to live. The median household income was also nearly $17,000 more per year than the state's average, so residents here will likely have a large range of rentals to choose from.

Voorhees Attractions and Special Events

Many residents in the area love to visit nearby Wharton State Forest. With plenty of rivers and streams for canoeing, waterside hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding, this is an adventurer's paradise. If you are more of a nature lover, take advantage of seeing the many lakes, ponds and fields for wildlife observation. Bald eagles, red-tailed hawks, swans, owls, wild turkeys, beavers, river otters, foxes and deer are only a few of the species here that call Wharton State Forest home.
