The first residents in the area were a group of Puritans under the leadership of Robert Treat who left Connecticut in search of religious freedom in 1666. A formal treaty between Treat and the Hackensack Indians was signed a year later, giving the Puritans ownership of the land. At this time, the Newark settlement was also developing nearby, and within 10 years, the region had all of the amenities of a modern civilization. West Orange as it stands today began to develop as the town of Fairmount in 1862. An act of the New Jersey State Legislature combined Fairmont with a re-districted portion of the town of Orange, and West Orange was born.
