The first residents in the area were a group of Puritans under the leadership of Robert Treat who left Connecticut in search of religious freedom in 1666. West Orange as it stands today began to develop as the town of Fairmount in 1862. An act of the New Jersey State Legislature combined Fairmont with a re-districted portion of the town of Orange, and West Orange was born.
