Living in Westwood, NJ

People living in Westwood rentals can enjoy being part of a town with a rich history. The land on which Westwood sits today was previously home to the Lenni-Lenape Indians of the Eastern Algonquin Nation. The first permanent settlers arrived in the area in the mid-1700s, and the area was primarily used as farmland prior to the outbreak of the Civil War. In 1780, Isaac Bogert purchased 500 acres of land and established his residence in the area with his family.

The borough went through a series of name changes on its way to its Westwood name today, originally called Pleasantville in the early 19th century before becoming a part of Harrington Township in 1826. Harrington was renamed Washington Township in 1840 and Pleasantville's name was finally changed to Westwood in 1875. Westwood was officially incorporated as a borough in 1894 and remains today.
