Overview of Hunts Point

If you rent an apartment in Hunts Point, Bronx you'll be near one of the world's largest food distribution centers. The New York City Terminal Market, the Hunts Point Cooperative Market, and the New Fulton Fish Market are just three of the facilities in the southern section of the neighborhood. Together they claim over 1,700,000 square feet of space, selling meat, fish, and produce from over 55 countries. Most of this low-income neighborhood is industrial, but there are small residential sections to the north.

Europeans first settled Hunts Points in 1663. It was, for centuries, a home to wealthy landowners. After the Great War, apartments began to replace mansions and city sprawl claimed the area. Industry took advantage of the riverfront location and the rail lines. Along with many other parts of the South Bronx, a plague of arson hit Hunts Point in the 1970s. Many residents left. Hunts Point may be improving, but it is still known for high crime rates, drug use, and prostitution. The peninsula sits south of the Bruckner Expressway, framed by the Bronx and East rivers.

Hunts Point Lifestyle and Entertainment

Hunts Point Avenue is the main street in the neighborhood. Here you can find some restaurants, bars, and shops. Along with markets and banks, you can also check out galleries featuring graffiti and classic hip-hop style art. Hunts Point isn't large on green space, but Barretto Point Park on the waterfront has fishing piers, boat launch areas, and-in the summer-a floating pool! Other small parks dot the neighborhood.

Hunts Point Info and the Rental Market

Approximately three-quarters of Hunts Point residents are of Hispanic origin. Over half live below the poverty line. There are older apartment buildings and a small number of row houses available to renters. Expect to pay around $1100 a month to live here. For commuters, the IRT Lexington Line runs along the other side of the Bruckner Expressway.
