Living in Riverdale

Many find Riverdale apartment rentals, up at the northern edge of New York City, to be worth the trip. While the area feels suburban, it isn't terribly far from the action. You can get to Riverdale from Midtown Manhattan in half an hour by rail. You can even still see the Empire State Building from the neighborhood. Riverdale's affluence, its abundant parkland, and its excellent schools all appeal to middle and upper class New Yorkers. In fact, many find it presents a best-of-both-worlds package.

Riverdale sits just north of Manhattan, west of the massive Van Cortlandt Park, and south of Yonkers. It's broken into four sub-neighborhoods: Spuyten Duyvil, Central Riverdale, Fieldston, and North Riverdale. Beginning in the 19th century, the area filled with tycoons' country estates. When commuting by rail became possible, these affluent citizens started living in Riverdale year-round. You can still catch a glimpse of that era's architecture and atmosphere in places. Apartment buildings and less opulent houses came to Riverdale in the 20th century, but the neighborhood remains well off.

Riverdale Lifestyle and Entertainment

The main retail areas of Riverdale are along Mosholu, Riverdale, and Johnson avenues. It's a neighborhood with malls, family-run stores, Irish pubs, and ethnic eateries. Restaurants include Beccofino for Italian, the Palace of Japan, and the Riverdale Steak House.

One of the highlights of Riverdale is the amount of green space it contains. Numerous parks, some with original forests, brighten the neighborhood. Van Cortlandt Park dominates the eastern border and Riverdale Park runs along the Hudson River. Wave Hill, a combination botanical garden and outdoor art gallery, presents programs in horticulture, education, and the arts.

Riverdale Info and the Rental Market

Riverdale is a well-off area for the The Bronx, but prices are considerably cheaper than in Manhattan. If you're not looking for a Georgian or Tudor mansion, you can pick between smaller houses, post-war apartment buildings, or newer luxury buildings with doormen. People of all ages live in Riverdale, from young singles to seniors. It may be the most expensive section of the borough, but the average rental price is still only $1,390.

To get from Riverdale into the city, you have a few choices. The IRT Broadway - Seventh Avenue Line subway ends in Riverdale. The Metro-North Hudson Line commuter rail takes you to Midtown Manhattan in about 25 minutes. There's also express bus service.

Riverdale Resources

Riverdale is known for its excellent schools. There are two public elementary schools and a public middle/high school, the Riverdale/Kingsbridge Academy. There are also three top-tier private prep schools, including Horace Mann and the SAR High School. There are branches of the New York Public Library in Central Riverdale and in Spuyten Duyvil. Two weekly newspapers, the Riverdale Press and the Riverdale Review, keep residents informed. Bronx Community Board No. 8 oversees the area.
