Living in Cobble Hill

When it comes to the appeal of renting a Cobble Hill apartment, the cat may be out of the bag. This neighborhood is close to Manhattan, thick with historic buildings, and yet somehow remains relatively affordable. Cobble Hill feels close-knit and charming. Its tree-lined streets lead to some of the best restaurants in Brooklyn. Old, family-run places sit beside trendy new bars. All this happens with the small area outlined by Atlantic Avenue, Hicks Street, Smith Street, and Degraw Street.

The Dutch first settled Cobble Hill in the 1640s. During the Battle of Long Island, American forces called the area Cobble Hill after a so-named hill they had fortified during the Siege of Boston. The town stayed mostly rural until the South Ferry started running in 1836. At that point, the city grid transformed Cobble Hill into a middle-class residential area. It was considered part of Brooklyn Heights until the 1950's, when the old name became popular again.

Cobble Hill Lifestyle and Entertainment

Cobble Hill's Court and Smith streets keep busy. You can buy Italian-style meats at Los Paisanos, get your haircut at an old-fashioned barbershop, and then duck into a snazzy new restaurant, such as Battersby. Because of all the places that have opened here in the past twenty years, people call Smith Street Brooklyn's "restaurant row." Lately, the flood of food has been followed by a wave of bars. Both GQ and Esquire have rated Clover Club one of the best cocktail bars in America.

In terms of shopping, you can still find old favorites, like the Middle Eastern market Sahadi's. Newer boutiques and hip artisans ply wares here as well. Cobble Hill Cinemas is family-run and shows a mix of art-house and general audience films. Cobble Hill Park was carefully reconstructed in 1989. It's a good place to grab a bench and enjoy a picnic.

Cobble Hill Info and the Rental Market

Cobble Hill is full of 19th century Italianate brownstones and brick row houses. Several new apartment buildings have gone up, too, but historic district designation keeps development in check. The neighborhood houses many long-term residents alongside newer arrivals. Both families and singles find reason to rent here. Cobble Hill two-bedrooms cost an average of $3,387 a month.

Transportation to and from Cobble Hill is good. The IND Culver Line stops at Bergen Street. On the F or G train, it will take you about 24 minutes to reach 42nd Street.

Cobble Hill Resources

Long Island College Hospital is on Atlantic Avenue. Public School 29 gets a good report for its extracurricular activities. The Carroll Gardens branch of the Brooklyn Public Library isn't far, and neither is the nearest US Post Office, on Columbia Street. For local government support, Cobble Hill looks to Brooklyn Community Board No. 6.

Cobble Hill Zip Codes

Zip codes 11201 and 11231 serve Cobble Hill.
