Overview of Williamsburg

If you rent a Williamsburg apartment, you'll be moving into one of the world's hippest neighborhoods. Stepping off the L train at Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn is a bit like entering SoHo 40 years ago-except this time the giant moustaches are ironic. Indie rockers, artists, and hipsters flock here. Baristas and bartenders tag along. There's more to Williamsburg than making the scene, however. This neighborhood contains established enclaves of Italians, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, and Hasidic Jews.

Williamsburg lies just across the Williamsburg bridge from Manhattan, between Bushwick and Greenpoint. Its rough boundaries are Kent, Flushing, and Morgan avenues. Williamsburg became part of the City of Brooklyn in 1855, continuing its impressive economic and cultural growth. Cornelius Vanderbilt and others built shore-side mansions here. When the Williamsburg Bridge opened in 1903, immigrants teemed across. Those crowds, combined with a decline in industry, brought crime. In the 1990s, the area was re-zoned residential. Those unwilling or unable to afford lofts in Manhattan came to Brooklyn. Williamsburg became the next big thing.

Williamsburg Lifestyle and Entertainment

Williamsburg entertainment options differ in the hipster and the Hasidic communities. Most new arrivals, however, come for the cutting edge culture. In terms of food, you can expect top-notch restaurants. Zagat surveys rated Peter Luger Steak House the best in New York City for 28 years straight. At Fette Sau, you can order barbecue by the pound. If you're less keen on meat, head to Samurai Mama for sushi. Bars are likewise plentiful. The Hotel Delmano mixes seductive cocktails and Spuyten Duyvil pours exotic beers. Brooklyn Brewery holds a happy hour on Friday nights if you want to drink right from the source.

Bedford Avenue is Williamsburg's main shopping street. Oak sells forward-looking fashion for both sexes. Beacon's Closet is better if you prefer vintage threads. For a night out, there's everything from the lanes at Brooklyn Bowl to the Journal Gallery to indie rock venues such as Pete's Candy Store and Public Assembly. McCarren Park is Williamsburg's biggest, with a dog run, a pool, and a regular farmer's market.

Williamsburg Info and the Rental Market

A large percentage of people moving to Williamsburg are students, recent graduates, and hipsters seeking sub-Manhattan rents. Unfortunately, they'll have to look hard. Rents in some buildings have doubled in just a year. They're especially high near the Bedford L train stop. Expect to pay around $2,900 for a one-bedroom in Williamsburg. Your rental options will include walk-ups, artist lofts, and high-rise luxury condos.

Three subway lines travel through Williamsburg: the BMT Canarsie, the BMT Jamaica, and the IND Crosstown. The East River Ferry to 34th Street and Wall Street departs from South Williamsburg. If you're more energetic, you can get to Manhattan's East Side in less than half an hour by biking over the bridge.

Williamsburg Resources

There are a couple branches of the Brooklyn Public Library in Williamsburg. You can find a US Post Office on South 4th Street off Marcy Avenue. Williamsburg is represented by Brooklyn Community Board No. 1.
