This family-friendly community is nestled in scenic upstate New York, and is known as one of the most attractive Rochester suburbs. Fairport was first settled as the town of Perinton in two flats areas of Perinton Center by Glover, Johanna and Jesse Perrin. Originally a swampy area, the land was drained with the construction of the Erie Canal in the 1820s. The town quickly became a busy center on the canal widely known for being a “fair port.” The addition of railroads in 1853 brought new industry and transportation to the reputable town. Incorporated as a booming village in 1867, the town eventually became the center of activity in the area.
Perinton has been home to many large companies including Deland Chemical, Cobb Preserving and the Trescott Company. The companies have relocated or been acquired, but today Fairport is still home to a thriving business landscape. Nearby Rochester has many exciting sports and nightlife attractions, allowing Fairport residents to enjoy the best of city and suburban living. Although there are no traditional college opportunities available in the village of Fairport, there are a number of colleges located 11 miles away in Rochester. The University of Rochester, Nazareth College of Rochester, St. John Fisher College and Monroe Community College join the specialized Eastman School of Music, Rochester Institute of Technology and Roberts Wesleyan College in offering students a well-rounded education.
For those seeking work, Fairport is home to many small businesses and larger companies in three leading industries. Educational, health and social services provide jobs for 25 percent of the local population. Manufacturing accounts for another 16 percent, with scientific, administrative and waste management services following with 11 percent. Seventy percent of local residents work in management, sales and office occupations, and join 13 percent in service occupations in making up most of the Fairport workforce.
With the relaxed atmosphere and scenic environment of Upstate New York, residents in Fairport pay very low rent prices. Fairport is home to the Fairport Music and Food Festival, featuring great live music, good food and children’s activities to benefit the Golisano Children’s Hospital. Three stages of music and accompanying beer gardens fill the air with different styles of music and well-known bands. The Taste of Fairport joins the festival, with many local restaurants selling samples of their signature dishes. Fairport also hosts the Fairport Canal Days, a juried art show that has taken place in the region for more than 30 years. Artists feature their works in jewelry, flora, photography, wood, mixed media and more. Performance artists and the Fairport Duck Race join the Canal Days attractions. Other local favorite events include the Scarecrow Festival and Monroe County Lilac Festival.
