Fairport was first settled as the town of Perinton in two flats areas of Perinton Center by Glover, Johanna and Jesse Perrin. Originally a swampy area, the land was drained with the construction of the Erie Canal in the 1820s. The town quickly became a busy center on the canal widely known for being a “fair port.” The addition of railroads in 1853 brought new industry and transportation to the reputable town. Incorporated as a booming village in 1867, the town eventually became the center of activity in the area.
Perinton has been home to many large companies including Deland Chemical, Cobb Preserving and the Trescott Company. The companies have relocated or been acquired, but today Fairport is still home to a thriving business landscape. For those seeking work, Fairport is home to many small businesses and larger companies in three leading industries. Educational, health and social services provide jobs for 25 percent of the local population. Manufacturing accounts for another 16 percent, with scientific, administrative and waste management services following with 11 percent. Seventy percent of local residents work in management, sales and office occupations, and join 13 percent in service occupations in making up most of the Fairport workforce.

The Taste of Fairport joins the festival, with many local restaurants selling samples of their signature dishes. Fairport also hosts the Fairport Canal Days, a juried art show that has taken place in the region for more than 30 years. Artists feature their works in jewelry, flora, photography, wood, mixed media and more. Performance artists and the Fairport Duck Race join the Canal Days attractions. Other local favorite events include the Scarecrow Festival and Monroe County Lilac Festival.
