The Fishkill area has deep roots in America's history, and played a strong role in the American Revolution. It was first settled in 1683 by many Dutch immigrants. In 1775, after the start of the Revolution, General George Washington stationed about 2,000 Continental soldiers in the town. It was also home to one of six regional post offices established by Benjamin Franklin. Although Fishkill has always been a relatively small town, the construction of Interstate 84 brought more business opportunities to the area in the late 1960s.
The town attracts many commuters today, and its its main industries include manufacturing, accommodation and food services and retail trade. Business owners receive support through the Fishkill Business Association, whose members include representatives from Burger King and the Hudson River Performing Arts Center.
