Albany County is the oldest settlement in the nation that is still continuing today, and the city of Albany still works under its original charter. In the early 17th century, the area now known as Albany County was settled by Dutch and French fur traders. It was one of the 12 original counties of New York, and by 1774 the county was the most populated in the state. At the turn of the century, the borders of Albany County shrunk significantly, and they remain the same today. Albany County was also home to the first Shaker community in 1776, and today the original meeting house, cemetery, orchard, and a farm are still present.
