Lenox Hill, Manhattan, NY
Living in Lenox Hill
Rent an apartment in Lenox Hill and you'll live in one of the toniest parts of town. Lenox Hill is the southern section of the Upper East Side-and that's the richest slice. The neighborhood was named for Scottish merchant Robert Lenox who bought the land in 1818. His heirs divided the farmland into lots for buildings in the 1860s. Today, it's home to those with prestige and, according to some, a bit of pretention. Lenox Hill ranges from 59th up to 72nd Street, and debatably between Fifth Avenue and Lexington. There is a small rise near Madison and 70th Street, but no real hill.
Lenox Hill Lifestyle and Entertainment
As one of the premiere neighborhoods in Manhattan, Lenox Hill boasts boutiques and fine dining. Fashionistas strut the catwalk of Madison Avenue. Posh restaurants like Café Boulud and Caravaggio will tempt your tongue. For a less formal feast, you can find diners and delis on Lexington. While it's not an area known for nightlife, there is a pub scene on First, Second, and Third Avenues. More appreciated in the evening is the safety and quiet, rare for Manhattan. Located alongside Central Park, Lenox Hill has immediate access to the southeast quarter of Manhattan's grand green. This is the section of the park that holds the Central Park Zoo and the Summerstage.
Lenox Hill Info and the Rental Market
Lenox Hill is the expensive section of an expensive area of an expensive city. Unsurprisingly, you won't find a ton of turnover in rentals here. What availability there is tends to come in the form of luxury condos and co-ops, although bargains can be found. The average two-bedroom doorman apartment here rents for $3,166. Renting a gorgeous pre-war apartment or a charming brownstone will cost more. Because of the cost, this is an area popular with old money professionals and a new generation of movers and shakers. The IRT Lexington Avenue subway line serves Lenox Hill, while another subway is being built along Second Avenue. Many residents favor the Madison Avenue bus, instead. It takes about a half-hour to get to Wall Street on the subway from Lenox Hill.
Lenox Hill Resources
Lenox Hill Hospital has a reputation for innovative medical and surgical treatments. The neighborhood has both a library and a post office. Lenox Hill fits in Manhattan's Community District 8. This is the only area of the borough where Democrats are not in the majority. Republicans live in equal numbers in Lenox Hill.
