If you rent a Midtown West apartment, you'll be living in an area crackling with energy. From Times Square to Radio City Music Hall, this Manhattan neighborhood packs it in. Businesses, landmarks, shopping, and more all make the western side of Midtown a mecca for tourists.
Midtown West encapsulates a range of areas. The lights of the Theatre District and the revitalized hub of Hell's Kitchen both fall between 29th and 59th Streets west of Fifth Ave. It can be a bit grittier and nosier in Midtown West than in Midtown East, but the neighborhood claims more culture in recompense. The Port Authority terminal and the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center both make their home in Midtown West.
Midtown West Lifestyle and Entertainment
If you're wondering what there is to do in Midtown West, here are two words for you: Times Square. It's bright lights, big city. Upscale and down, super-sized and intimate, Midtown West has plenty of shopping and dining options. Join the gawkers at Planet Hollywood or at Sardi's. Stroll Broadway shopping every step, or head further west to Chelsea to escape the crowds. Midtown West isn't just flashy on the street. Duck into Radio City Music Hall or slip into the Theater District to watch the stars shine indoors. You can catch comedy at places like Caroline's as well.
If you want a drink, you'll probably want one Midtown West's less trafficked areas. Just north of Midtown is the grand escape of Central Park, but there's also Bryant Park at West 42nd and Sixth Ave. This mid-city oasis is a great place to grab lunch or ride the carousel.
Midtown West Info and the Rental Market
Midtown West public transportation could not be better. You've got an alphabet of subway lines to choose from plus buses, the Port Authority, and Penn Station. The tougher news is that the area is better for businesses and hotels than for residential units.
The average rent for a one-bedroom in a non-doorman building in Midtown West is $2,473. While the area appeals to tourists, there are sections that claim more local character. Hell's Kitchen is known as an actor's haven and the Meatpacking District is one of Manhattan's most fashionable neighborhoods.
Midtown West Resources
New York City's main post office is in Midtown West, at 421 8th Avenue. While it no longer offers 24 hour service it's still open later and longer than most others. This section of the city is also home to the main branch of the New York Public Library, a Beaux-Arts landmark building on Fifth Avenue. Midtown West is represented by Community District 4 & Community District 5.
