Dutch Village is situated 200 feet above the Hudson River on land discovered by Henry Hudson during his exploration on the Halfmoon in 1609. Fourteen years later, what is now Albany was established as a trading port called Fort Orange. When the British acquired all Dutch possessions in North America, several patroonships were offered to wealthy Dutch families. The vast domain of 1093 square miles came under the jurisdiction of Kiliaen Van Rensselaer by royal grant. The first recorded transfer of a small segment of the land from the Van Rensselaer family became the present site of Dutch Village Apartments.
