Niagara, NY
Overview of Niagara
Located near the prestigious Niagara Falls and the U.S./Canada national border, the city of Niagara is one of New York's most unique communities. Just 25 miles north of Buffalo, Niagara is known as the "retail hub of western Niagara County." Home to Niagara Falls International Airport, freight and passenger rail lines, and the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority, the city is definitely a town of transit. Despite Niagara's establishment as a transport hub and proximity to everything Buffalo has to offer, the city enjoys a cost of living that is near the U.S. average, according to City-Data.
Living in Niagara, NY
Niagara County was officially established in 1808 and was at the center of the construction for the Erie Canal - one of the country's earliest and largest public works projects. This massive canal was built during the days before rail when commerce was shipped from city to city by boat. Today, the city has grown into a community that has many different facets. With its transport hub and close location to Niagara Falls, there is a thriving tourist community in Niagara County. However, the city is also home to a strong military presence with the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station. This base is the largest federal facility in the region and the last national U.S. Air Force installation in the Empire State.
Niagara Attractions and Special Events
Undoubtedly, Niagara Falls State Park - America's oldest - is the biggest and most popular attraction in the area. Now an American icon, the falls were once protected by a team of environmentalists concerned over protecting the natural beauty of the powerful waterfalls. Today, it is one of the state's largest tourist attractions.
