Living in LeFrak City
If you rent a LeFrak City apartment, you might end up in Mandalay or Melbourne. That's because this massive apartment complex on the south side of Corona, Queens names its buildings after exotic locales. There are twenty 16-story towers here, housing over 14,000 people.
LeFrak City was named for developer, Samuel J. LeFrak. His company built this complex in the 1960s as a refuge for working- and middle-class families who wanted Manhattan-style living but not Manhattan-style prices. Now, it's a popular location for people who want convenience without high costs. The 40-acre development sits between Junction Boulevard, 57th Avenue, 99th Street, and the Long Island Expressway.
LeFrak City Lifestyle and Entertainment
You can relax, play ball, and go for a swim without leaving LeFrak City. In addition to the residential apartments, the complex holds two large office buildings, shops, and parking. That's banks, bakeries, pharmacies, and restaurants all accessible without wheels.
If your needs are more extensive, there's still no need to drive. The Queens Center Mall and Rego Park Center are both within walking distance. They house stores such as Costco, Century 21, and JCPenny. There are lawns and trees within LeFrak City, but for a real park experience, most head to Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, less than a mile away.
LeFrak City Info and the Rental Market
LeFrak City is home to a very diverse population. Because apartments are large and reasonably priced, vacancy rates stay low. One-bedrooms rent for between $1,000 and $1,375 depending on amenities. A three-bedroom will cost you $1,775 a month. From LeFrak City, you can easily reach the M and R trains, which run down Queens Boulevard. The 7 train is a bit farther off, on Roosevelt Avenue.
LeFrak City Resources
LeFrak City has its own branch of the Queens Borough Public Library and a US Post Office on site, too. Queens Community Board No 4 oversees the Corona area. To apply for an apartment, contact the Rental Office.
