Overview of Schenectady

With its historic past and strong residential community, it's no wonder Schenectady is a desirable community. The city holds an important place in history, and residents are proud of their popular and innovative community.

Schenectady apartments for rent can be found throughout the area, and new residents will find they are easily accepted into this inviting city.

Living in Schenectady, NY

Schenectady was first populated by the Mohawk Native American tribe. While there were no large Native American settlements here, the tribe built hunting shelters and rest areas for long days traveling or searching for food. They called the land "Schau-naugh-ta-da," and a revised version of the name was picked up by Dutch settlers when they arrived in 1661.

The Dutch settlers built a small town, but in 1690 it was attacked by the French and several Native American tribes. The entire town was burned, and all but 60 residents were killed in what became known as the Schenectady Massacre. The community was rebuilt, and officially became a city in 1798.

Throughout the 1800s and 1900s, Schenectady proved to be an innovative city in the area. Thomas Edison brought his Edison Machine Works to the community in 1887, and just a few years later the city became home to the General Electric Company. It became one of the first cities in the country with a commercial radio station.

Today, Schenectady has a population of more than 66,000. With a diverse population and strong past, the community has high hopes for a prosperous future.

Schenectady Work and Study

Schenectady is home to Union College, which has been an important educational institution in the community since 1795. This small, liberal arts college is committed to each student's individual development and academic progress. Students seeking a two-year degree can choose to study at the local junior college, Schenectady County Community College. The school is part of the State University of New York, and provides pupils with the opportunity to study various subjects, participate in athletic programs, and transfer to a four-year university to complete a bachelor's degree.

Many large businesses provide employment to Schenectady residents. Some of the largest employers in Schenectady County include General Electric, Golub Corporation, Lockhead Martin, Ellis Hospital and St. Clare's Hospital.

Rentals in Schenectady, NY, and Cost of Living

The city's rental market varies, and Schenectady apartments differ in price. Residents can expect to pay anywhere between $650 and $1,500 per month for a rental property. The U.S. Census Bureau found that the median gross monthly rent in the area was $772.

Residents can cut down on their transportation costs by using the public transit systems. The local Amtrak train and Greyhound bus service shuttle residents throughout the county.

Schenectady Attractions and Special Events

One of the popular local attractions is the Museum of Innovation and Science, formerly known as the Schenectady Museum. This educational museum features exhibits, volunteer opportunities and special hands-on science activities. The museum is a great place for families, kids and adults to enjoy an educational experience.

Those interested in the arts may enjoy a visit to Proctors Theater. The theater has been entertaining residents since 1926, and has been restored to its original grandeur. Proctors originally featured comedy and musical acts, in addition to showing films on a regular basis.  Today, the theater still hosts special community events in addition to showing films for the community to enjoy.
