Grymes Hill, Staten Island, NY
Living on Grymes Hill
Grymes Hill apartments and rentals provide some of Staten Island's most majestic views. From the top of this 354-foot hill, residents look out over Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Upper Bay, and the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. Upscale Grymes Hill is named for Suzette Grymes, widow of the first governor of Louisiana. She bought large parcels of land here in the 1800s and built mansions, including one for herself named "Cap di Monte," meaning "Top of the Hill." Those houses no longer stand, but other, newer grand estates sit along the quiet streets. Built in early 20th century European style with lush grounds, these homes stand out from the Staten Island standard.
Grymes Hill is located between Richmond Road and Van Duzer Street, the Staten Island Expressway, Victory Boulevard, and either Louis Street or Cebra Avenue.
Grymes Hill Lifestyle and Entertainment
Grymes Hill is a well-off neighborhood. There are a few boutiques and restaurants around the edges, but you'll most likely travel to eat and shop. In nearby Stapleton there are mid-range Italian places and fast food options. Shopping can be found in busier towns along Staten Island's North Shore.
For fresh air, Silver Lake Park is within walking distance. It features a golf course, running tracks, and tennis courts. Clove Lakes Park has ball fields and boating.
Grymes Hill Info and the Rental Market
Most of the rentals and properties you'll find on Grymes Hill are high-end homes. There are also, however, some apartments from the 1940's and after. Some of these buildings have turned condo or been converted to elderly housing. The average rental price on Grymes Hill is $1,380.
There are a few buses that wind through the neighborhood for commuters. Express buses run down Victory Boulevard heading towards Manhattan.
Grymes Hill Resources
Grymes Hill is home to Wagner College and a campus of St. John's University. Residents say students make parking hard to come by. There's a branch of the New York Public Library in Stapleton (currently being renovated) and a US Post Office in nearby Clifton. Staten Island Community Board No. 1 covers Grymes Hill.
