The neighborhood's name, like many in New York City, stems from the Dutch. The first recorded European settlement here was Nieuwe Dorp, in 1671. During the American Revolution, the area was a center of activity. Then, in the late 1800s, members of the wealthy Vanderbilt family moved to New Dorp. Today, the neighborhood serves as a good south shore home for singles and families.

New Dorp's friendly pedestrian shopping area is New Dorp Lane. Here, you can find restaurants, salons, banks, and more. For ethnic food, try Nori Sushi and Taste of India. Afterwards, stop by Sedutto's Happiness House for an ice cream. In you're looking for evening entertainment, there are bars and billiard parlors in New Dorp. On Hylan Boulevard, you'll find a cinema, a TJ Maxx, and more.
Miller Field and Gateway National Park borders New Dorp to the east. This state park is 187-acres of beach, trails, soccer fields, and playgrounds. Todt Hill and the Richmond Country Club are to the northwest.
