Overview of Oakwood

You can find Oakwood apartments and rentals along winding lanes and forested trails. Then again, you might opt to live down by the Atlantic Ocean and the surf swept beach, all in Oakwood. This desirable neighborhood on Staten Island's east coast has a country feel to it, but developers are making inroads. For each weather-beaten bungalow that comes down, two or more town houses go up. Still, this area remains pleasant and peaceful.

Up until the middle of the 20th century, Oakwood was split between farmland up hill and resorts along the sea. After the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge opened, however, the area joined suburbia. These days, Oakwood is middle-class with a commercial strip along Hylan Boulevard. The neighborhood is enclosed by Ebbitts Street, the tracks of the Staten Island Railroad, Gateway National Recreation Area, and the Atlantic Ocean.

Oakwood Lifestyle and Entertainment

Like in many of the neighborhoods on this side of Staten Island, most of the businesses in Oakwood are located along Hylan Boulevard. You can find a pocket of shops and restaurants near the Oakwood Heights Staten Island Rail Road station as well.

Gateway National Recreation Area, colloquially called Great Kills Park, covers about 1,200 acres of beach, salt marsh, and woods. There's also a man-made harbor inside the park. Amundsen Trail offers joggers 4.5 miles of room to run. The beach is great for boating, swimming, and fishing.

Oakwood Info and the Rental Market

If you're looking for a rental in Oakwood, you'll mostly find one- and two-bedroom family homes and garden apartments. Median rents in the area come in at around $1,320 a month. Your neighbors in Oakwood will likely be a bit wealthier than in towns farther north up the coast. Most people are married, but don't have kids.

For commuters, the Oakwood Heights railway station will put you on a train up to the Staten Island Ferry. There's also bus service along Amboy Road and Hylan Boulevard. In either case, you're looking at some significant time spent commuting.

Oakwood Resources

From Oakwood, the closest public library and US Post Office are both in New Dorp. There's also a branch of the New York Public Library in Richmondtown. Staten Island Community Board No. 2 covers Oakwood.
